Crafting a resume can feel like beating a boss on hard mode without saving your progress.

Don't worry, I've got you covered.

Today, I'm sharing 10 resume tips specifically for gamers that will level up your job search, whether you're in the gaming industry or not.

A bit about me: I spent years as a Senior Talent Acquisition Specialist, managing 30+ roles for a multi-million dollar company.

I've reviewed over 9,000 resumes (yes, I tracked them in Excel) and participated in hundreds of interviews.

After getting laid off on Halloween 2024, I combined my love of gaming with my recruitment expertise to create Dellyn Digital, making the job hunt more fun, engaging, and understandable for gamers.

Here are the 10 tips:

  1. CRAFT YOUR CHARACTER BUILD (The Summary Section) Your resume summary is like your character bio in an RPG. In a few lines, highlight your strongest skills and achievements.

Example: "Creative Problem Solver with 5+ years in project management and a proven track record of increasing efficiency by 20%."

Keep it relevant to the job you're applying for.

  1. HIGHLIGHT YOUR XP (Quantifiable Results) Employers care about results, not just tasks. Instead of "Managed projects," say "Led a $5,000 project that increased company revenue by 15%."

Numbers and percentages are your XP, they show what you've accomplished.

  1. USE KEYWORDS (Your Skill Tree) Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) scan for specific keywords from the job description. Analyze the posting and weave those terms naturally into your resume.

If the job requires "data analysis" and "team collaboration," make sure those phrases appear in your achievements.

Pro tip: There's no "ATS bot", a human sets up these systems, so your resume will be seen by real people who still scans to see if you have what the team is looking for.

  1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT GEAR (Formatting) Clean, professional formatting is crucial. Use simple fonts like Arial or Calibri (size 10-12). Create clear sections: Experience, Education, Skills.

If you're an artist, keep your creativity in your portfolio, not your resume format.

  1. SHOWCASE TRANSFERABLE SKILLS (From Noob to Pro) Skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership are valuable everywhere. Did you lead a guild? That's leadership. Organize tournaments? That's project management.

Show employers you're more than one-dimensional.

  1. CREATE A MASTER RESUME (Your Loot Chest) Keep one comprehensive document with every role and achievement you've ever had. This is your master resume—you'll never send it to anyone.

You should actually have 4 resumes:

  • Master Resume (everything)

  • LinkedIn Resume (optimized for online visibility)

  • PDF Resume (clean, concise, for applications) - Depending on your skills & roles you apply tom you can have different versions of this.

  • Digital Resume (video format—more on this later)

  1. TAILOR FOR THE JOB (Choose Your Main Class) A generic resume won't cut it. Customize your resume for each job, just like choosing the right class for a mission.

Use the job description as your guide.

  1. USE ACTION WORDS (Critical Hits) Start bullet points with strong verbs: Designed, Developed, Optimized, Led.

Avoid weak phrases like "responsible for" or "helped with."

  1. INCLUDE SIDE QUESTS (Volunteer Work & Personal Projects) Side quests often yield the best rewards. Include relevant volunteer work, YouTube channels, blogs, or mods that relate to the job.

Employers love seeing initiative.

  1. KEEP IT 1-2 PAGES (Portable Save File) For most roles, one page is best. If you have 7+ years of experience, two pages is acceptable.

Keep it streamlined and focused on the most impactful information.

BONUS TIP: Use a Digital Resume for Extra Buffs Video is becoming more prevalent in this new age of looking for work and work.

Creating a short video resume where you talk about your achievements can make you stand out instantly.

It's like equipping an epic skin that gets you noticed.

QUICK RECAP:

  • Your summary is your character build

  • Quantify achievements like XP

  • Use keywords to beat the ATS

  • Highlight transferable skills

  • Customize like picking your main class

These tips will transform your resume into a legendary item that impresses recruiters and gets you in the door.
