I just covered this in my latest GlassDoor Stories episode, and a teaching assistant asked the question so many job seekers are thinking:
"Has anyone actually found a job through LinkedIn DMs? Bold move or desperate?"
Here's the truth: It works.
But here's where most people mess up:
They think opening a DM is the cheat code.
It's not.
Your LinkedIn profile is your character build. Your content is your reputation bar. Your network is your party roster.
If those aren't leveled up, your DM strategy is like entering a boss fight with no armor.
Here's the load-out you actually need before you start DMing:
💼 A LinkedIn profile that showcases your skills clearly.
Not just a resume copy-paste. Show what you bring to the table. If you're a teaching assistant with video editing skills, post curriculum breakdowns. Share your teaching philosophy. Be present.
🔗 A network of the right people.
Connect with decision-makers in your industry. Follow them. Comment on their posts. Add value before you ask for anything.
📩 A DM that's personalized and valuable.
Don't just say "Hey, I'm looking for work." Show them you've done your homework. Reference their work. Explain how you can help them solve a problem.
💡 Bonus tip: Use the "Open to Work" banner.
I know some people think it looks desperate. It doesn't. Recruiters use it as an official LinkedIn tool. Leave it on.

A contracts manager dropped some serious knowledge in the thread. Here's the breakdown:
✂️ Only go back 18-20 years on your resume.
