So currently the US just hit the highest layoffs since COVID times….
📉 Layoff Surge in July 2025
62,075 job cuts were announced in July—up 29% from June and 140% higher than July 2024.
This figure exceeds both the post-pandemic average (23,584) and the past decade's July average (60,398).
📊 Year-to-Date Totals
806,383 layoffs have occurred from January to July 2025.
That’s a 75% increase over the same period last year and already 6% more than all of 2024.
It's the highest January–July total since 2020, when layoffs exceeded 1.8 million due to pandemic shutdowns.
🏛️ Key Drivers of Layoffs
Government downsizing led by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Donald Trump.
Corporate restructuring and the impact of artificial intelligence, which accounted for over 10,000 job cuts in July alone.
Tariff concerns have also affected nearly 6,000 jobs this year.
🏢 Sectors Most Affected
Federal government: 292,294 layoffs so far in 2025.
Nonprofits and healthcare: Hit by reduced public funding (referred to as the “DOGE Downstream Impact”).
Tech firms and retailers: Also contributing significantly to the layoff numbers.
