💡Job hunting Tip of the week 💡

Create a Target Company List

Most job seekers apply randomly and hope something sticks.

High-level job hunters flip the strategy, they create a focused list of companies they want to work for and build their search around that.

🎯 1. What Is a Target Company List?

It’s a curated list of 15–30 companies that match your interests, values, career goals, and industry.

Instead of chasing every job post you see, you get intentional about where you want to go.

🔍 2. Why It Works

A target list helps you:

• Build deeper knowledge of the companies you’re applying to

• Network with the right people inside those organizations

• Tailor your resume and LinkedIn profile more effectively

• Focus your energy instead of burning out

This is how you go from random applications to strategic opportunities.

🧩 3. How to Build Your List

Look for companies that:

• Align with your values and long-term goals

• Have roles that match your skills

• Offer growth opportunities

• Have good culture and leadership

• Are stable or growing in your industry

Use Glassdoor, LinkedIn, company websites, and news articles to evaluate them.

Glassdoor is a game changer.

Review these comapines, like I do in the Company Checkpoint Podcast.

🎮 4. Think of It Like Choosing Which Factions You Want to Align With

In games, you don’t join every guild or clan. You choose the ones that match your playstyle and strengths. Your target company list works the same way, you’re aligning with the worlds where you can truly thrive.

💡 TL;DR: A target company list gives you direction, clarity, and control over your job search.

It helps you go from “hoping for interviews” to earning interviews strategically.

What’s New with the Job Market this week?

This week’s job market update: U.S. payrolls rebounded in September with 119,000 jobs added, but the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.4%, its highest in four years.

The labor market still shows mixed signals, solid hiring in healthcare and hospitality, but losses in manufacturing and transportation.

📊 Key Highlights

  • Payroll Growth: Nonfarm payrolls rose by 119,000 jobs in September, beating forecasts of ~50,000. However, earlier months were revised downward, showing weaker momentum.

  • Unemployment Rate: Climbed to 4.4% (from 4.3% in August), the highest since 2021. This reflects more people entering the labor force than finding jobs.

  • Sector Trends:

    • Healthcare: Added ~43,000 jobs, mainly in hospitals and ambulatory services.

    • Leisure & Hospitality: Gained ~47,000 jobs, with restaurants and bars contributing 37,000.

    • Retail: Added ~13,900 positions.

    • Transportation & Warehousing: Lost over 25,000 jobs.

    • Manufacturing: Shed ~6,000 jobs.

    • Professional & Business Services: Declined, especially in temporary help.

  • Wages: Average hourly earnings rose 0.2% month-on-month, 3.8% year-on-year, slightly above inflation but showing slower growth.

🏦 Policy & Market Implications

  • Federal Reserve: Economists are split. Stronger job growth reduces urgency for a rate cut, but rising unemployment strengthens the case for easing. With no new jobs data before the Dec 9–10 Fed meeting, markets expect the Fed to hold steady until early 2026.

  • Investor Sentiment: The mixed labor signals, combined with AI-driven restructuring and trade tensions, are contributing to broader market volatility. Stocks dipped after the report, reflecting uncertainty about growth prospects.

⚖️ Takeaway

The labor market is in a “no-hire, no-fire” state: employers aren’t aggressively cutting jobs, but they’re also cautious about new hiring.

Growth is concentrated in healthcare and hospitality, while cyclical sectors like manufacturing and transport are weakening.

Rising unemployment suggests cooling momentum, even as headline job gains look solid.

Let’s see how next week goes.
