💡Job hunting Tip of the week 💡
Build a “Skill Gap Tracker” to Stay Ahead of the Competition
Most job seekers only focus on what they already know.
High-level job hunters focus on what they need to know next and they track it intentionally.
⸻
🎯 1. What Is a Skill Gap Tracker?
It’s a simple document where you list:
• The roles you want
• The skills those roles require
• The skills you currently have
• The gaps you need to close
Think of it as your personal roadmap for becoming the most hireable version of yourself.
⸻
🔍 2. Why It Works
A skill gap tracker helps you:
• Avoid guessing which skills matter
• Prioritize what to learn next
• Build confidence going into interviews
• Stand out from candidates who haven’t prepared
• Show employers you take your development seriously
This is how you turn preparation into power.
⸻
🧩 3. How to Build Your Tracker
Here’s what to include:
• Job Title: The role you’re aiming for
• Required Skills: Taken directly from job descriptions
• Your Current Level: Beginner, intermediate, advanced
• Gap: What’s missing
• Action Steps: Courses, projects, certifications, portfolio pieces
• Timeline: When you’ll build each skill
Use LinkedIn job postings, job descriptions, and career path tools to identify missing skills.
⸻
🎮 4. Think of It Like Leveling Up Your Character Sheet
In RPGs, every character has stats, Strength, Intelligence, Agility.
You don’t wait for the boss fight to discover you’re under-leveled.
You look ahead, identify weaknesses, and train before stepping into the challenge.
Your skill gap tracker is your real-life stat sheet. It keeps you leveling at the right pace.
⸻
💡 TL;DR: A skill gap tracker makes your job hunt intentional.
It gives you clarity on what to learn, where to improve, and how to become the top candidate in your field.
I recently made a video about how to do this but for your LinkedIn profile.

What’s New with the Job Market this week?
📉 1. Hiring Has Slowed to the Weakest Pace Since 2013 Jobseekers are being hired at the slowest rate in over a decade, according to Labor Department data.
Job growth has essentially flatlined.
Unemployed workers are staying out of work 6+ months on average.
The Fed is now weighing whether to cut rates again because the labor market looks fragile.
This is the first time in years where the Fed is openly prioritizing protecting jobs over fighting inflation.
🧑🎓 2. New Grads Are Struggling and It’s Worse Without a Degree The labor market slowdown is hitting new college grads hardest, with their unemployment rate now outpacing the national average for the first time in decades.
Employers are tightening hiring criteria again.
Skills‑based hiring gains from the pandemic are reversing.
Roughly 60% of Americans without a degree are facing even steeper barriers.
This is a major reversal from the Great Resignation era.
🚨 3. Private Employers Lost 32,000 Jobs in November ADP data shows private employers shed 32,000 jobs, marking the worst four‑month stretch since the pandemic.
Losses were widespread across industries.
Only hospitality and health care added jobs.
Small businesses are being hit hardest by tariffs and supply disruptions.
Economists are calling this a shift from “low‑hiring” to start‑to‑fire conditions.
🔥 4. Layoffs Have Surpassed 1 Million This Year U.S. employers have announced 1.17 million job cuts so far, the highest since 2020.
Layoffs are up 54% from last year.
AI‑related layoffs alone account for ~55,000 jobs.
Tech, telecom, and tariff‑exposed sectors are leading the cuts.
This is the clearest sign yet of corporate retrenchment.
📊 5. Job Openings Are Stuck at 7.7 Million JOLTS data shows openings holding at 7.67 million, far below the 2022 peak of 12.1 million.
Quits are falling workers are losing confidence.
Layoffs ticked up.
The government shutdown delayed key data, making visibility worse.
This is a labor market that’s cooling, not collapsing, but the direction is unmistakable.
🪓 6. November Layoffs Fell vs. October. But Still Historically High November job cuts dropped to 71,321, down sharply from October’s 153,000, but still 24% higher than last year.
This is the highest November since 2022.
Year‑to‑date cuts are the highest since the pandemic.
Small businesses and tariff‑exposed sectors are driving the volatility.
The term “forever layoffs” is starting to circulate among workers.
✅ The Big Picture The job market is entering a slowdown phase, not a crash. But the combination of:
tariffs
high interest rates
AI‑driven restructuring
cautious consumer spending
and delayed government data
…is creating a labor market that’s tightening from both sides: fewer hires, more cuts.
This is exactly the kind of structural shift you’ve been tracking and it’s accelerating.
