💡Job hunting Tip of the week 💡

💼 Career Tip of the Week: Use Informational Interviews to Skip the Line

Most job seekers wait for job postings to appear.

Strategic job seekers talk to people before the role even exists.

Informational interviews help you gather insight, build relationships, and position yourself early.

🎯 1. What Is an Informational Interview?

It’s a short conversation with someone already working in a role or company you’re interested in. You’re not asking for a job. You’re asking for insight, advice, and perspective.

Think of it as scouting the map before starting the mission.

🔍 2. Why It Works

Informational interviews help you:

  • Learn what skills actually matter in the role

  • Understand company culture beyond job descriptions

  • Get referrals organically over time

  • Build relationships before you ever apply

Most hires come from familiarity, not applications.

🧩 3. Who to Reach Out To

Start with:

  • Alumni from your school

  • People with your target job title

  • Employees at companies on your target list

  • Second degree connections on LinkedIn

You only need 15 to 20 minutes of their time.

📝 4. What to Ask

Good questions include:

  • What does a normal week look like in your role?

  • What skills helped you get hired?

  • What would you focus on if you were starting over?

  • Is there anyone else you recommend I speak with?

Do not ask for a job. Let the relationship do the work.

🎮 5. Think of It Like Unlocking Hidden Side Quests

In games, the best rewards are rarely on the main path. Informational interviews unlock hidden opportunities that never hit job boards.

💡 TL;DR: Informational interviews turn strangers into allies and applications into warm introductions.

What’s New with the Job Market this week?

📉 Key Labor Market Shifts This Week

🔺 Unemployment Hits a 4‑Year High

  • The unemployment rate rose to 4.6%, the highest since 2021.

  • That’s up from 4.0% at the start of the year, a meaningful trend, not noise.

🧊 Hiring Has Slowed Sharply

  • November saw 64,000 jobs added, better than expected but still weak historically.

  • October was brutal: 105,000 jobs lost, driven heavily by federal workforce reductions tied to deferred resignations.

  • This marks the third time in six months the economy has shed jobs.

🏛️ Federal Government Job Losses Are Distorting the Picture

  • The federal workforce shed 162,000 jobs in October alone.

  • Since the start of the year, federal jobs are down 271,000.

  • These losses are tied to a deferred‑resignation program and the government shutdown’s data blackout.

🧮 Wage Growth Is Barely Outpacing Inflation

  • Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% in November and 3.5% year‑over‑year, only slightly above inflation, meaning real wage gains are minimal.

🏥 Where Jobs Are Growing

  • Health care added 46,000 jobs in November.

  • Construction added 28,000, including 19,000 roles tied to nonresidential specialty contractors, likely AI data center build‑outs.

🚚 Where Jobs Are Shrinking

  • Transportation & warehousing lost 18,000 jobs, especially couriers/messengers.

  • Leisure & hospitality shrank by 12,000, a potential early warning sign for consumer demand.

  • Manufacturing continues to lose jobs despite policy pushes to revive it.

🧭 Macro Signals to Watch

🧊 Cooling Labor Market Analysts describe the market as “cooling” or even “turning frigid” after a long period of gradual softening.

🧂 Data Uncertainty

Because of the 43‑day government shutdown, October data is incomplete and November data may have quirks, analysts warn to take it with “more than a few grains of salt”.

🧨 AI & Tariffs Loom Large

  • AI‑driven job displacement is accelerating, especially in repetitive cognitive work.

  • Tariffs are expected to pressure retail, services, and manufacturing into 2026.

🧵 Bottom Line

The job market is weakening, not collapsing, but clearly losing momentum. Rising unemployment, slowing hiring, and sector‑specific stress (transportation, manufacturing, hospitality) contrast with pockets of strength (health care, construction tied to AI infrastructure).

Given your interest in labor markets and AI’s impact on hiring, this is one of those weeks where the data lines up with the broader structural story: the labor market is shifting from a post‑pandemic expansion into a more fragile, uneven phase.

If you want, I can break this down into a shareable post, a chart‑ready summary, or a sector‑by‑sector outlook for 2026.
