💡Job hunting Tip of the week 💡
Use Informational Interviews (AKA coffee chats) to Unlock Hidden Opportunities
Most job seekers wait for job postings to appear.
Strategic job seekers talk to people before roles are ever posted.
Informational interviews help you learn, build relationships, and position yourself for opportunities that never hit job boards.
⸻
🎯 1. What Is an Informational Interview?
An informational interview is a short, casual conversation with someone working in a role or company you’re interested in. You are not asking for a job. You are gathering insight, advice, and perspective.
Think 15 to 30 minutes, low pressure, high value.
⸻
🔍 2. Why This Works
Informational interviews help you:
• Learn what the job is really like beyond the job description
• Understand what skills actually matter in the role
• Get advice directly from people already in the field
• Build relationships that can turn into referrals later
Hiring managers trust referrals far more than cold applications.
⸻
🧩 3. How to Ask for One the Right Way
When reaching out on LinkedIn:
• Keep the message short and respectful
• Mention what caught your attention about their career
• Ask for advice, not opportunities
• Be clear about the time commitment
Example:
“Hey [Name], I’m exploring roles in [field] and your background stood out to me. Would you be open to a 20-minute chat so I can learn from your experience?”
⸻
🎮 4. Think of It Like Unlocking Map Knowledge
In games, you talk to NPCs to learn shortcuts, dangers, and hidden paths. Informational interviews do the same thing for your career.
They reveal routes you cannot see from the outside.
⸻
💡 TL;DR: Informational interviews give you insider knowledge, real connections, and access to opportunities most job seekers never see.
Take some time this week and reach out to someone on LinkedIn, it can change your whole job hunt and even life.

What’s New with the Job Market this week?
📉 Hiring Is Slowing…
Fresh labor data shows the job market continues to lose steam:
The U.S. added 64,000 jobs in November, a modest gain that confirms a broader slowdown in hiring.
October actually saw a loss of 105,000 jobs, driven heavily by a sharp drop in federal government employment.
The unemployment rate ticked up to 4.6%, the highest since 2021.
This aligns with the trend you’ve been tracking: a labor market that’s still functioning but clearly cooling.
🧊 Layoffs Remain Historically Low
Despite the slowdown, layoffs aren’t spiking:
Jobless claims fell to 199,000, well below expectations and still near historically low levels.
This suggests companies are reluctant to cut staff even as hiring slows — a sign of caution rather than panic.
🏛️ Federal Workforce Is Shrinking Fast
A major story this week:
Federal employment has dropped 271,000 since January, with a huge chunk tied to deferred resignations and administrative changes.
This is distorting month-to-month job numbers and contributing to the elevated unemployment rate.
🏗️ Which Sectors Are Moving?
Gaining jobs:
Health care (+46,000)
Construction (+28,000)
Social assistance (+18,000)
Losing jobs:
Transportation & warehousing (–18,000)
Federal government (–6,000 in November, after –162,000 in October)
🏦 Fed Is Responding
The Federal Reserve cut rates again in December — its third consecutive cut — citing concerns that the job market is weaker than it appears on the surface.
