💡Job hunting Tip of the week 💡

Control Your Digital First Impression

Before a recruiter speaks to you, they Google you.

Most job seekers forget that their online presence is part of their application whether they like it or not.

So…. What do you see when you Google yourself ?

🎯 1. What Is Your Digital First Impression?

It is everything that shows up when someone searches your name:
• LinkedIn profile
• Other social media accounts
• Portfolio or personal website
• Old content or tagged photos
• Comments and public activity

This shapes perception before you ever get an interview.

🔍 2. Why This Matters

Your digital presence can:
• Reinforce your professionalism
• Support your expertise
• Create trust before a conversation
• Or quietly hurt your chances

Recruiters and hiring managers look. Many just do not tell you they did.

🧩 3. How to Audit Yourself

Search your name in Google and review:
• What appears on the first page
• Whether your LinkedIn is optimized and current
• If your profile photo looks professional
• Whether public posts reflect the direction you want to grow
• If anything needs to be cleaned up or adjusted

If you are serious about your career, your online presence should reflect that.

🎮 4. Think of It Like Your Character Preview Screen

Before someone invites you to a team, they look at your character build. Stats, gear, achievements.

Your digital presence is your preview screen. Make sure it reflects the player you are becoming, not who you were five years ago.

💡 TL;DR: You cannot control every part of the hiring process, but you can control what people see when they look you up. Make your digital first impression intentional.

Comment this if it helped level up your thinking.

What’s New with the Job Market this week?

Despite a stronger‑than‑expected January payroll number (+130,000 jobs), economists warn the labor market remains weak and highly vulnerable. Job gains are heavily concentrated in just a few sectors, masking broader stagnation. Newsweek

Key signals:

  • Unemployment: 4.3% (down slightly from 4.4%). Newsweek

  • Job growth: Still far below pre‑2025 norms; revisions show last year was even weaker than initially reported. Newsweek

  • Hiring pace: Large firms are cautious; small businesses are reducing headcount. Marketplace

🏥 Where the Jobs Actually Are

The labor market’s strength is almost entirely propped up by a few sectors:

Sector

January Job Gains

Notes

Healthcare

+82,000

Continues to be the backbone of job creation. Newsweek

Social Assistance

+42,000

Steady demand. Newsweek

Construction

+33,000

One of the few bright spots outside care sectors. Newsweek

Federal Govt & Financial Activities

Job losses

Outside these pockets, the economy would have lost jobs over the past year. Newsweek

🔻 Layoffs & Job Openings: Clear Signs of Cooling

Multiple indicators point to a softening market:

  • Unemployment claims jumped more than expected last week — a potential sign layoffs are accelerating. WRAL

  • Announced layoffs surged to 108,435 — the worst January since 2009. WRAL

  • Job openings fell to the lowest level in over five years. WRAL

  • JOLTS data shows rising layoffs and falling quits — workers are less confident. PBS

This aligns with your ongoing observation: worker confidence is collapsing, and mobility is down.

🧮 Structural Pressures: Why Hiring Is Stagnant

Economists highlight several forces dragging on the labor market:

  • Demographics: Boomer retirements shrinking the labor pool. Marketplace

  • Immigration policy: Tighter rules reducing available workers. Marketplace

  • Post‑pandemic over‑hiring: Companies are correcting inflated headcounts. Marketplace

  • Automation & AI: Productivity gains reducing the need for new hires. Marketplace

Given your interest in AI’s labor impact, this week’s data reinforces the trend: AI investment is rising even as hiring slows.

💸 Inflation & Wages: Workers Still Feel Behind

  • Inflation expected to cool slightly (2.7% → 2.5%), but consumers still feel real‑world prices rising faster. Marketplace

  • Wage growth roughly matches inflation, meaning no real gains for most workers. Marketplace

  • Real average hourly earnings rose just 0.3% in January. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

🏦 Market Reaction: Rate Cuts More Likely

Weak job market signals are pushing Treasury yields down, increasing expectations the Fed may cut rates to support the economy. WRAL

🔎 Bottom Line for This Week

The job market is not collapsing, but it’s clearly softening:

  • Hiring is narrow and uneven

  • Layoffs are rising

  • Job openings are shrinking

  • Worker confidence is low

  • Structural forces (demographics, AI, immigration) are suppressing growth

Healthcare and construction remain the only consistent bright spots.
