Welcome to the Company Checkpoint, a series designed for job seekers who want to level up their understanding of companies as if they were analyzing video games reviews.
Today, we're diving into Microsoft's Xbox, exploring everything from company culture to employee reviews.
This is for those on a quest to join the legendary gaming arm of Microsoft and wonder if they’re ready to hit start.
Level One: Company Overview
Microsoft's Xbox is not just a console; it's an expansive empire within the gaming industry, stretching from hardware like the Xbox Series X and S to services such as Game Pass and XCloud.
Based in Richmond, Washington, their influence is worldwide.
If you're aiming to join this epic guild, roles in engineering, marketing, game design, and program management are calling for adventurers.
Level Two: Glassdoor Reviews
Understanding a company's culture through employee reviews is akin to peeking at walkthroughs before starting a new game.
Xbox boasts a 4.1 rating on Glassdoor, with many lauding its culture, diversity, and work-life balance.
However, reviews also highlight a recurring villain: management issues.
Concerns about poor leadership and the impact of frequent layoffs mirror the high tensions described in the reviews.
Despite a few trolls amidst the fair reviews, the general tone is positive with cautious tales about middle management levels.
Level Three: Interview Insights
Heard tales of players facing daunting quests in the Microsoft interview process?
It's rated 3.1 out of 5 for difficulty.
Most adventurers report a multi-stage arena where technical and behavioral challenges vie for your grit.
About 67% of past interviewers had a positive experience, though some have encountered ghosting, a dark side lying in wait within recruitment.
Latest Patch Notes: Industry News
July 2025 was a critical update for Microsoft.
Although 9,000 jobs were cut, major loot piles up with Game Pass subscriptions skyrocketing.
I made a video going over it.
The layoffs resulted in canceled projects and scrapped quests like Everwild.
Yet, despite these setbacks, Microsoft's coffers swell with increased revenue.
A paradox with profits rising but hardware sales dropping.
Extra Level!
After I made this video, Microsoft decided to shoot themselves in the foot.
Here’s the latest breakdown on Xbox price hikes in 2025, both for Game Pass subscriptions and consoles:
🎮 Xbox Game Pass
Ultimate Tier: Jumped 50% from $19.99 → $29.99/month (extra $120 per year).
PC Game Pass: Rose by more than a third, now $16.49/month.
Other tiers:
Essential (replacing Core): $14.99/month
Premium (replacing Standard): $9.99/month
New perks: Ultimate now includes Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics.
Timing:
New subscribers pay the higher rate from Oct 1, 2025.
Existing subscribers see the hike from Nov 4, 2025.
Regional delays: Some countries (e.g., Germany, Ireland, South Korea, Poland, India) have temporary reprieves due to local regulations, but increases will eventually apply.
🕹️ Xbox Consoles (U.S.)
Xbox Series S (512GB): $399 (up from $379)

Sold my Xbox Series S to GameStop. Time to build a PC and stick with Nintendo Switch 2 & Steam Deck
Xbox Series S (1TB): $449
Xbox Series X (Digital): $599 (up $50)
Xbox Series X (Disc): $649 (up $50)
Xbox Series X (2TB Special Edition): $799 (up from $729)
Reason: Microsoft cites “macroeconomic environment” and U.S. tariffs driving costs.
Accessories (controllers, headsets): Prices unchanged.
📌 Key Takeaways
Microsoft is raising both hardware and subscription costs in the U.S.
The Game Pass Ultimate hike is the steepest, a 50% jump in just over a year.
Regional rollout is staggered, but all markets will eventually face higher prices.
For cost-conscious players, stacking prepaid Game Pass codes before the new rates kick in can lock in savings.
Level Four: Should You Apply?
Considering joining the ranks of Microsoft staff?
This decision is as crucial as choosing a character class in an RPG.
While benefits and global prestige are attractive, restructuring and layoffs loom large.
Departments like project management, cloud gaming, and engineering remain vibrant, though with caution flags.
Here are some smart interviews questions you can ask if you decide to press start with them:
How does the team handle crunch during major launches and projects?
