Here are our top takeaways.
We're back with another issue discussing AI in gaming, and honestly, it's getting wild out there.
Sony PlayStation just patented an AI model that could complete game levels FOR players. Not helping you, literally playing the game for you.
Here's our take:
I get it from a business perspective. New gamers struggling with tough games like Dark Souls might get frustrated and quit. Sony probably wants to keep players engaged without them leaving the platform to watch YouTube walkthroughs.
But here's the problem:
Looking up a guide still requires YOU to execute the task. With AI doing it for you, can you really say YOU beat the game?
It removes the sense of accomplishment that makes gaming special.
What about trophies and achievements? If AI completes challenges, does that even count? There are dedicated communities built around achievement hunting, this could destroy that entire culture.
The good news: It's only a patent, not a real feature yet. Let's hope it stays that way.
We're also seeing AI creep into game development. Halo Studios is reportedly using generative AI, and even Claire Obscure (which swept the Game Awards) faced backlash for using AI for early placeholder textures.
I think using AI as a TOOL in development can be acceptable in some cases—like voice modulation based on real actors. But using it to replace artists and designers? That's where I draw the line.
AI is here to stay, and companies will use it to cut costs and increase profits. We might soon see games marketed as "Made with NO AI"—like seeing "100% grass-fed" beef at the grocery store.
Let's hope it doesn't become the standard…
